After a day spent in the snow, there’s nothing better than returning to something warm and homemade. This season, we’re highlighting a simple and cozy recipe that brings together two Vermont favorites: maple syrup and sharp cheddar.
Maple Cheddar Biscuits
Perfectly flaky, subtly sweet, and rich with Vermont flavor — these biscuits make a wonderful winter treat. Serve them with breakfast, pair them with a bowl of soup, or enjoy one as a snack by the fire.

Perfectly flaky, subtly sweet, and rich with Vermont flavor — these biscuits make a wonderful winter treat. Serve them with breakfast, pair them with a bowl of soup, or enjoy one as a snack by the fire.

- 8 slices bacon, diced
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ¾ cup unsalted butter, frozen
- 1 ½ cups buttermilk
- 6 tablespoons maple syrup, divided
- 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450°F and line a baking sheet with parchment.
- Cook 4 slices of bacon until crispy, crumble, and set aside.
- In a bowl, mix 2 cups flour, 1 Tbsp baking powder, ½ tsp baking soda, and ½ tsp salt.
- Grate in ½ cup cold butter and stir until crumbly.
- Add 1 cup shredded cheddar and the cooked bacon; mix lightly.
- Stir in ¾ cup buttermilk and 2 Tbsp maple syrup until a soft dough forms.
- Roll to about 1-inch thick, cut into rounds, and bake for 15–18 minutes until golden.
- Brush warm biscuits with a glaze of 1 Tbsp melted butter + 1 Tbsp maple syrup.
