Perched along the shores of Lake Champlain, the Burlington Earth Clock may look like an ancient stone circle left behind by a prehistoric civilization, but it’s actually a blend of art, science, and mindfulness.

Created by the grassroots nonprofit Circles for Peace, this modern-day monument serves as a compass, calendar, and clock all in one. Step into its center, and you become part of the timepiece. Your own shadow acts as the gnomon, casting the hour upon the stones around you.

The 14 massive granite stones do more than mark the hours. Aligned precisely with the four cardinal directions, they also track the sun’s journey through the seasons. Look west from the circle’s center, and you’ll spot stones positioned to mark where the sun sets on the equinoxes and solstices.

More than a scientific installation, the Earth Clock was built with a deeper purpose: to foster peace, reflection, and harmony with nature. Visitors often describe a sense of grounding and calm as they stand within the circle, surrounded by open sky and the gentle rhythm of the lake.
