The World’s Tallest Filing Cabinet – A Burlington Icon
Just a short drive from Lakeshore Vermont, you’ll find one of Burlington’s most quirky and iconic landmarks: The World’s Tallest Filing Cabinet.
Built in 2002 by local artist Bren Alvarez, this towering sculpture—officially titled “File Under File Under So. Co., Waiting for…”—is made up of 38 stacked filing cabinets, each drawer symbolizing a year of paperwork tied to the long-delayed Southern Connector project.
Alvarez’s creation stands as both a work of art and a tongue-in-cheek commentary on red tape and government delays. Whether or not it truly is the tallest filing cabinet on Earth remains debatable. Other installations have made similar claims, but none capture Vermont’s mix of creativity, humor, and local history quite like this one.
Today, the sculpture has become a beloved photo spot for visitors and locals alike. It’s a must-see for anyone exploring Burlington’s vibrant arts scene.
